Many of us would like a practical way to help the Earth; we feel that sometimes action is needed. I have found the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) to be one of the best ways to help. They have been fighting much of what the current administration has been trying to do: fighting the battles in the courts and in the law, to help preserve the environment as much as possible. Their mission is to "Safeguard the Earth, it's people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends."  Please see their site for what they are doing about global warming, helping the whales, etc.
