Hello everyone, been a while since I was last here. Had some free time and a question or two, thought I'd stop by and see who will enlighten me I am starting to become more serious in the field of meditation and have been doing them at least once daily, or whenever I can. I have also been doing some on-line reading on meditation and the supposes benefits one will receive from daily practice. One such benefit caught my eye as I was reading the checklist. It said: 30 minutes of meditation in the Theta Mind state would equal around 4-5 hours of sleep.I am assume some of yous here have been doing meditation far longer then I have. What are your views on this statement? Does 30 minutes in a meditative state indeed equal 4-5 hours of sleep? If so, if I was to meditate for over an hour, which would in theory be an equivalent of about 10 hours of sleep, would I need to actually sleep at night? It is believed by some that a person can add years to there lives by getting less sleep. We all know that sleep is a natural and healthy way to recuperate the body, but with meditation, is sleep even necessary?

Hi Shift, Speaking only for myself in this idea ~ musing ~ musing ~ mmm ... Shared in childlike fashion in a woman's form, this is one of the most symbolic meanings after years of asking what you are asking here from my coming into continously remaining ~ In the pursuit of knowledge, everyday something is added. In the practice of the Way, everyday something is dropped. Less and less do you need to force things, until finally you arrive at non-action. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone.
~ Lao Tzu I realize that to view it all as a dream, illusionary, that everything falls into its natural place, space, pace ... emotions, mine and another's ... and ... remaining lucid, remaining conscious in a slip slidin' away world ... just let it roll and roll with it idea ~ less stress on the biology ~ Julia mumbling in ones sleep or whispering in ones ear fully awake ~

I have done what is called "magnetic" sleep, it was for a couple of hours, and I did in fact feel like I slept all night, however, it threw my pattern off. It would help for situations, ie: insomnia, to make up for rest. It's an unusual sleep, not like regular sleep, I felt half awake for most of it and out for bout half an hour, then, bam, my eyes popped open and stayed that way most of the day. The process is in the Seven Lessons book by Eugene Ferson.

Sorry boss, don't really follow, but maybe? The process to induce magnetic sleep is in the book. I don't think its meditation, but maybe its funny looking cousin.

Just mumblin' out loud in my sleep ... Boss? Lol! Too busy 'sleeping' to be da boss of anyone ... Nah, what I was expressing here my friend is relating to meditation being a way of life 24/7 and not just in 'bits and pieces' ... It's centered in Being in a relaxed state while actively living in this state kind of idea ... just mumbling ...

Once seasoned in meditation - it will give your BODY the rest of eight hours of deep sleep.
The longer I meditated with discipline and desire, the less sleep I required. The more energy I felt and the longer the continuity of my energy maintained a high vibrational level. It has been so for me for over three decades now.
When I was raising my family - i slept three to four hours per night, meditated twice a day, and then evolved to meditation while functioning daily. I go into formal meditation now only when the desire is felt to. Yoga becomes the natural motion of your body, meditation the natural frequency of mind, when you do not look at a clock to see if it is time to meditate - you are Zen. I do not do guided or meditations of anothers perception of it, that is their own meditation, as I am my own.
You want it - or you do not.

I love your poetic resposes Julia it was very enlightening ~ Lao Tzu, yeah I am some what familiar with him.
My question was more pertaining to the relations between supposed benefits from meditation and sleep. mgc1173 I don't have the Science of Being 7 lessons, I only have the 27 lesson version. However, I have came across what you are saying from another source. I don't think it is part of meditation.
zensunni7, you seem like a very experienced at meditation. You have decades of experience under your belt. I have not reached that level of which you are at now. I don't really look at the clock to meditate either, unless I noticed that I have went a long period during the day without having done it. I usually do it when I feel like it mostly when I'm not doing anything particular at the moment.
Often I do feel refreshed after, however it doesn't last very long and a few hours I am back to where I was before I did it.

Such a beautiful way of saying it Darrell truly. Once seasoned in meditation - it will give your BODY the rest of eight hours of deep sleep.

I appreciate your Presence. Namaste` Loves Presence extending your way today, Julia

Hi Shift and All, Thank you for your loving thoughts truly. I was musing on your last paragraph in my response; It is believed by some that a person can add years to there lives by getting less sleep. We all know that sleep is a natural and healthy way to recuperate the body, but with meditation, is sleep even necessary?
Pardon my humor interwoven in the mix of response in moments. All humor aside, you will add years to life and hours to your moments when remaining in a relaxed state of being is what I was sharing. And this is like getting a deep and restful sleep throughout your 'waking' moments. As Darrell has shared here I whole heartedly agree, it is a way of living... And I see where Igma called me 'Boss' When I commune with anyone face to face and in writing, bear in mind that I am sharing from 'my' experiences and by no means am saying you have to do something that works for me or else. Not my cup of tea. Language is an interesting art form and there are many opportunities for one to be misunderstood. I have shared that I speak in first person always, I just don't include this statement in everything I write ... I have shared and do practice this as a way of life by Inviting the Holy Spirit to guide me in all I think, do and say ~ this has allowed me to evolve in Peace and live this way more and more ~ Julia just being Julia~ Loves Peace Blessing All ~

Good day Mr. Power, Mr. Sunni7, Boss , I do enjoy meditation, but have had to step it back. I seem to let myself get to far adrift and was trying to use the magnetic sleep as an alternative to rest. I don't need much rest myself anyway. I spend most of my day working or chasing a hundred kids, well not a hundred but close. Meditation and concentration (for me) has done away with much of the veil that hides the other side. I thought this was true for most, but am starting to see its not. Focusing seems to provide all the energy needed without having to stop and meditate, I use meditation for prayer more than rest. Another good book to read is Shamanic Experience, by Kenneth Meadows.

I have a few years of expierience in meditation Knowledge. Yes you will awaken refreshed and rejuvinated depending on the type of meditation you are doing. Is the purpose of it for relaxation and rejuvination? When ever I am in my silent meditations I am always feeling fresh when I come out of it.
I for one would not replace sleep with meditation though. There are some that do, and appearently some that, or at least one person, that doesnt sleep at all. There are other ways of recharging your body if you do not wish to sleep, but why do so? A good nites rest could feel so pleasent if you let it. I am usually always filled with energy, with my Chi Kung practices, I am always filling myself up and recharging myself as much as I can throughout the day. There have been many times that I have forgone sleep, both by accident and on purpose. If you must loose sleep then get by without it if you need to, and not just for the sake of doing it.
There are many ways to add years to your life. It may depend on how ones sees life though. Do you see it in quanity or quality? If in quality, some have found ways to live 10 years worth a life time in as little as 3-4 years. What is your life like? How do you live it? What do you have to get done? Do you have anything to get done? Whats done, lol? These are the things you should consider and work with.

People live there lives bound by what they accept as right and wrong, true and false, correct and incorrect. That is how one defines reality!
But what does it mean to be correct, true or false? Hmm, merely vage concepts. Their reality may be a mirage!

Nicely said ol' wise one. Meditation will become not something that one will seek, but merely a state one will continuously experience throughout his day(s) ~ and Life. Like you sir Knowledge, I am not there yet. I have undergone such practices to quite the ever increase storm that was manifesting within my head - brought on by the worries of day to day life, and hundreds of questions. Once I've learned to "Be" and "Do" more than anything else, many things have become clear for me. The storm has settled so now I can think clearly and sleep at night . Oh and to answere your question sir "Know-how", meditation does wonders for recuperation and rejuvenation.

I'm having trouble meditating in the cross-legged position. On top of that I am having trouble relaxing in such positions, mostly do to my leg's. Keeping my back straight is another problem because as soon as I do relax, I slouch. Any suggestions ?
