Dear Talker,

Thank you!  for reminding me. Also my daughter computer died, was 5 years old anyway...so while pondering options such as employing one of my best friend to fix it or getting a new one, they are unbelievably cheap these days, my daughter who is doing a lot of computer graphic art  told me she doesn't want and LCD she prefers her old monitor... oh well these artists   cool

but I looked at it as a 'sign' to be cautious so!
I just backed-up all my data,
uninstalled some progs I don't use (symantec is one of them ..he he he)
removed a lot of data from active drive,
doing scan and defrag now

For some reason I always forget these things, last time I did a scan was more than a year ago  grin I guess I need a good guy to remind me Wink (thanks and kisses again)

love

Hi Laura,
Decades ago Norton was a  major fixture with me as the gent is brilliant. When he sold his interests to Symantec, is when things started doing downhill. I had to also remove all Symantec based programs to regain computer stability. The Security Risk check, if followed as I wrote it, will not install a heavy footprint though, only a cookie. Lcd's are NOT my desired viewing screen. So plasma, is a cousin to the old regular monitor for viewing. When improperly set LCD's, moving ones eyes or head away from 'direct' front will dilute what is being observed. So your daughter is seeing that change, good for her in noting that.

Greetings All,

What would a 'hacker or an unauthorized' access to your computer reveal, regards stored User Names and passwords!

(I use Win XP, what would show or even work, on any other OP system, unable to say.)

Do this check to find out:

Bring up 'RUN' from the start  menu.

Type this exactly as shown, using both high and low caps.
                (or copy and paste)

              rundll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr

This will show all stored User Names and Passwords saved on your computer.
What is shown (if any) are to my understanding, for ones convenience going on-line to various websites , that require a 'user name and password. If any do show in the popup window when you do this, they can be 'deleted'. I suggest that you 'copy and write or 'print them out first, before 'deleting'.

Naturally your on your own here, as I don't have all the answers, if a problem were to show up after doing this.

The popup window that showed when I did this check, was empty, no names or passwords.

Dear Talker,

when you said "it will bring up all user names and passwords stored on your computer"',
I am not quite sure what you mean.
Do you mean, for instance, it could be this forum with user name and pw?
I don't even know if they are stored on the computer. I just come here and log-in. Does that mean they are stored?
Does that mean someone could pretend to be me? Or anyone else? This is not a good thought.

Is that possible?

Thanks

Hi,
Not to worry. what would show,if any, are those on your own computer.
Your own computer at home, stores and keeps a record,  of all the places you visit and logs any password required to get on that particular site. There are a couple levels of security on your own computer, that hide the main passwords used from being readily accessed. If you typed in what I showed, and nothing was listed in the popup window, that's it, nothing more to do.

(note)
When you see a window popup on your own home computer, when you sign-in or login at any site, that says 'remember me' or 'keep me logged in' , that information is kept in your own home computer in special files.
Make sure your 'firewall' is on for some degree of security.
Any time you or anyone asks for help with computer related situations, mention what operating system is used. Mine for instance is Windows XP Pro, there is also Windows XP Home, Vista, and others, and there is a difference between the versions. Many basic features are the same though.

Hi Freedom,
Thank you for expressing the merge benefit.
Just to clear the air here, not all the posts are scheduled for merging. Related subjects, and high interest posts are our prime ones for being merged.
You've not mentioned it, but 'did you do the password check!' and if, yes, what were the results!
Are you aware of how to clear the cache and cookies! Or how to check the folders, files and hard drive for errors!  Defrag!
Most all of these good habit processes are available on most computers through the 'Help and Support' section.

Hello To All,
Often one will run into tiny computer quirks and glitches that are slowing things down. Some where, some place, another computer user has experienced what is showing up on your computer, or needs further clarification to correct. While this won't be a high tech problem solving place, Forum members with certain difficulties, may get an answer here.

Hello to All,
Two areas of computer useage are often a source of 'Oh nuts, not again' annoyances. They are computer crashes and deleted files. With careful attention, and a bit of time, you can recover and correct many of these instances.

Become familiar with the process before a crash, in a relaxed state, so when or if a disaster hits, the panic of the moment is easier coped with.

I have used a registry repair, and  a deleted file recovery program with success. Backup of the registry is an absolute must. BEFORE messing with it. I kid you not, when I say this. Type in, without the quotes "regedit", in the Start\Run box. What comes up is a window showing what 'activates and controls ALL the activity of your computer'. There is NO allowances for errors here. One tiny misstep in a critical area here, and POW, your computer WILL crash. Not maybe, WILL crash. Use "regedit" to create your backup registry file. Best also to save this registry backup to a CD disk and a file on the hard drive. Just look, don't mess with, don't alter anything, But DO make a backup.
Ok, that was about the computer registry.

Another situation is when you delete a file or photo, but the 'wrong' one.
STOP immediately. Do not save or add any note or file that you have in progress, that needed to be written to disk. Anything written to disk at this point may overwrite the just 'deleted' file. Here is where you would use a 'deleted file recovery' program. I've recovered 'Oh nuts, not again' deleted files a number of times. After becoming aware that one can recover deleted files, I did a few deliberate delete and recovers for practice. Use notepad and create a small file. Name the file with a simple, easy to recall name, and delete it, now start the 'deleted recovery program' and recover it. Believe me, the time spent learning how to recover a deleted file without pressure is delightful, compared to recovering a deleted file under pressure to do so.

While I've not actually used either of these two listed programs, I do have much older ones buried in my computer to use. Might even update. Anyway, the point here is to make you aware that there are ways to recover and retain ones composure.
You are required to register with ZDnet, but it is a quick easy process.
Must mention here, it's all at your own risk, in the doing. Only the first attempts will cause a tad of nervousness.

In real estate buying and selling they say 'location, location, location, for profits. In the computer world it's 'backup, backup, backup, to to retain ones peace zone.

Beloved friend,

Thank you soo much for all the effort you put in this. I will pass it to my compouter whizz friends - for some reason as my life is pacing faster and faster I can't be bothered anymore with spending time on computer servicing - I simply cannot afford the downtime, and Spirit lovingly provided me with people to do that for me. Smiley

However I tell you the 'steps' you meantion about not doing anyting extra to further break the toy ..lol.. I learned the hard way a few years back.

Again deepest grateful thoughts to you for the useful links and advice. >Smiley<

Dear Talker, I havent done the password check thing , yet. I mostly rely on my partner cos we share the same computer, plus we have a really good 'computer fixer-upper that recently upgraded our computer, and he said much the same as you and Adrian did, which gave me more confidence in him, cool

However, I am still taking on board all your wonderful advice. I should print it out so I have stuff to go back and look at if things happen. I dont have any files that matter, anything that matters is on discs. And can be gotten back if needed.

Thanks so much for all your devotion and help to us all here.

Much appreciated

Dear All,

"March 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the invention of the Web.   Like all great inventions, it arises out of an unmet need that badly needed a solution.  Tim Berners-Lee foresaw the great potential that can be unlocked by connecting data across disparate operating systems.  You can see the full talk by Tim Berners-Lee as he explains it at: "

Hi Laura,
Powerful process. Little understood, by many, yet has matured beautifully. Did catch a write on it and you beat me to posting it.
Great minds at work.
Thank you.
